How to effortlessly mix and match pillows - French Country style
Mixing and matching pillows can transform your living space into a cosy, elegant retreat,
reminiscent of the French countryside. We love the look of mixed and matched pillows, but selecting
the winning combinations can be challenging. After creating countless pillow combinations,
we’ve learned that success lies in three key steps: identifying a color scheme, mixing patterns
of varying scales, and incorporating different textures. By carefully considering how these elements
work together, you can achieve a beautifully cohesive look.
Choose a colour scheme
Identifying a color scheme simplifies the process of mixing and matching throw pillows.
Start by deciding which accent colors you want to highlight or introduce into the space.
Throw pillows are perfect for adding colors to a neutral room, updating your palette for different seasons,
or complementing existing decor like artwork or rugs. If you're unsure about a color scheme,
use your favorite patterned pillow as inspiration. Extract colors from the pattern to create a cohesive
palette and build from there.
Choose an organic pattern
Organic pillow prints, inspired by nature, often feature movement and curved lines,
making them tricky to pair. We recommend selecting these prints first. Typically, organic prints
are multi-colored but don't have to be; botanical and floral patterns are classic examples.
By starting with these dynamic designs, you can more easily coordinate other elements in
your pillow arrangement.
Adding geometric prints to your pillow mix
After selecting your organic prints, choose geometric printed pillows to balance the look.
Geometric patterns, characterised by lines, grids, and repetition, add structure and interest.
To maintain cohesiveness, ensure at least one color from your organic print is present in your
geometric pillows. This harmony between movement and structure creates a visually appealing and
balanced arrangement.
Picking your pillow sizes
Once you have the palette, you can begin thinking about pillow sizes.
A good rule of thumb is to start with the larger pillows and work your way down.
Try and vary your shapes and sizes to create depth and dimension to your space.
Adding solid colours and incorporating texture
If you prefer an eclectic and curated look, using only patterned pillows can achieve this effect.
Each pattern choice should be intentional to create harmony. However, adding solid
or textured pillows can provide a visual break, balancing the overall arrangement.
Solid pillows help to let the patterns stand out without overwhelming the space,
adding depth and cohesion.
